Constant Spring Golf Club opened in 1920 as a 9 hole course, but it was expanded to 18 holes in the 1930's. Nestled in the foothills of Norbrook ... one of Kingston's residential areas ... it is one of the oldest of the Jamaica Golf Courses, and was built on an old sugar plantation. It was designed by Stanley Thompson, a well known Scottish Canadian Course Architect (a mentor of Robert Trent Jones Snr.) who was also involved in the design of the golf course at the Manchester Club in Mandeville.
The Constant Spring Golf course is a fairly short course, but with its narrow fairways and relatively small greens it will test your golfing skills. For Men from the Blue Tees it is only 6094 yds, and from the Whites only 5742 yds, and for Ladies from the Reds it is just 5141 yards.
Trees, numerous gullies, out of bounds fences, well placed bunkers and ponds are there to catch any errant shot.
The short 9th hole is a lovely, but tricky short par 3, flanked by ponds which are fed by the Constant Spring, and the road which is out of bounds. Pin point precision is needed, and many a round has been ruined here.
Constant Spring's signature hole, the 13th, is a short, drivable but narrow par 4. Miss it, and you could be in lots of trouble. The tee is high above the green, and you have a spectacular view of a very tight fairway and a small green, with a gully running the entire way along the right of the fairway, and a steep hill with thick rough on the left. A possible birdie hole that has ruined many a round of golf.
And
if you are lucky enough to beat 13th hole, don't rejoice just yet,
because the gully is there to catch you on the par 5 14th. On the 16th the road on the left will catch stray shots.
And on the 17th and 18th, the girls in the Immacculate Conception High School on the left, seem to attract many balls.
The Constant Spring Golf Club is certainly worth a visit. It is one of my favorites, and it is a joy to play. There is also a thriving social life at the Constant Spring Golf Club, and you will be made to feel very welcome. Our Jamaican hospitality is second to none.
And when you come to play at the Constant Spring give yourself time to play the course at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club as well.
When you play please return to this page and leave your comments just below, or your golfing story or course review here.
